NOTE FROM THE PERMANENT MISSION OF BRAZIL REQUESTING INCLUSION OF THE ITEM “COMMEMORATION OF WORLD PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE DAY” ON THE ORDER OF BUSINESS OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL

The Permanent Mission of Brazil to the Organization of American States presents its compliments to the Chair of the Permanent Council and, in accordance with Article 42 of the Rules of Procedure of the Permanent Council, has the honor to request the inclus ion of the item “Commemoration of World Portuguese Language Day” on the order of business of the regular meeting of the Permanent Council scheduled for May 6, 2026.

World Portuguese Language Day, which is celebrated on May 5, was officially proclaimed by the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) in 2009 and recognized as an international observance by UNESCO in 2019. With around 300 million speakers today, and a projected 500 million by the end of the century, Portuguese is spoken on five continents. It is the most widely spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the major languages of global communication.

The proposal seeks to recognize, within the framework of the OAS, the value of multilingualism as a tool for hemispheric integration and the promotion of cultural diversity. The initiative is consistent with the status of Portuguese as an official language of the OAS and with the principles of pluralism and linguistic inclusion that guide international organizations.

In accordance with Article 46 bis of the Rules of Procedure of the Permanent Council, the Permanent Mission of Brazil has the honor to request that this agenda item include special guests and,

In accordance with Article 46 bis of the Rules of Procedure of the Permanent Council, the Permanent Mission of Brazil has the honor to request that this agenda item include special guests and, at this time, suggests the participation of the Executive Secre tary of the CPLP, Ambassador Maria de Fátima Jardim; the Permanent Observer of Portugal to the OAS, Ambassador Francisco Duarte Lopes; and the Permanent Representative of Brazil, Ambassador Benoni Belli, each with up to seven minutes for their remarks.

The Permanent Mission of Brazil to the Organization of American States avails itself of this opportunity to convey to the Chair of the Permanent Council the renewed assurances of its highest consideration.
