JOINT STATEMENT BY BOLIVIA, BRAZIL, CHILE, COLOMBIA, MEXICO AND URUGUAY ON THE INTERNATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF VISIBILITY
(Read by Ambassador Sebastián Kraljevich, Permanent Representative of Chile, during the regular meeting of the Permanent Council held on April 23, 2025)
JOINT STATEMENT
JOINT STATEMENT
BY BOLIVIA, BRAZIL, CHILE, COLOMBIA, MEXICO AND URUGUAY
ON THE INTERNATIONAL TRANSGENDER DAY OF VISIBILITY
On this International Transgender Day of Visibility, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay reaffirm that trans women are women, trans men are men, and that the rights of transgender, non-binary, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse persons must be fully recognized, protected, and upheld throughout the Americas. We remain steadfast in our commitment to their dignity, equality, and full inclusion in all aspects of society.
Transgender and gender-diverse individuals strengthen our communities and enrich our democracies. Today, we celebrate their invaluable contributions, while also acknowledging the discrimination, violence, and systemic barriers they continue to face. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has repeatedly highlighted the alarming levels of violence and discrimination against trans people in the Americas, urging states to take concrete action to prevent and address these human rights violations. At the same time, we recognize the resilience and leadership of trans communities, who continue to advocate for justice, equality, and full participation in all spheres of life.
Protecting and empowering trans and gender-diverse individuals requires acknowledging the distinct challenges shaped by intersecting identities, including—but not limited to—race, ethnicity, ability, and socioeconomic status. This includes recognizing the unique experiences of Indigenous gender-diverse persons, whose identities and traditions have long been integral to cultures throughout the hemisphere. It is essential that these diverse experiences are intentionally acknowledged and addressed in the pursuit of equality and justice for all.
Let us be clear: trans rights are human rights. No one should be denied their rights because of their gender identity or expression. On this day—and every day—we stand in solidarity with trans, non-binary, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse persons across the hemisphere, celebrating their voices and reaffirming our shared commitment to inclusion, equality, respect for all, and the protection of LGBTI+ right.
