SUMMIT IMPLEMENTATION REVIEW GROUP (SIRG) OEA/Ser.E

First Regular Meeting of 2025 GRIC/O.1/INF.55/25

February 20, 2025 24 February 2025

Washington, D.C, United States Original: Bilingual

INTERVENTION BY CANADA

(Gillian Gillen, Alternate Representative to the OAS)

Mr. Chair,

Canada believes it is essential to continue to work together to prevent and respond to threats posed by transnational criminal activity, to combat corruption, trafficking in persons, illicit logging and mining, drugs and weapons trafficking, migrant smuggling and related money-laundering.

Moreover, we must strengthen the justice and security sector to effectively prevent, identify, and prosecute criminal activity.

Canada is committed to international efforts to address root causes of violence to strengthen the rule-of-law, promote effective and inclusive governance, and defend human rights.

Canada is committed to international efforts to address root causes of violence to strengthen the rule-of-law, promote effective and inclusive governance, and defend human rights.

Another pillar of human security is food security and Canada believes in a food systems approach that considers the entire scope of activities involving food, from production to consumption and final use, taking into account all the social, economic and environmental elements, their relationships and related effects.

Canada’s approach to inclusive and sustainable food systems also considers the interlinked challenges of agricultural growth, food security, and climate change, with a specific focus on helping women, girls, and vulnerable communities adapt to climate change, mitigate its impacts, and increase the resilience and production of their crops.

Canada also recognizes the great importance of energy security. Indeed, securing the processes through which energy is produced, delivered and consumed is of paramount importance.

We would like to highlight the need to address the triple challenge of energy security, climate crisis and geopolitical risk.

It remains central to ensure diverse, clean, resilient, and responsible energy technology supply chains, including manufacturing and critical minerals, that avoid a high degree of geographic concentration.

Regarding water security, finding the best ways to keep our water safe, clean and well-managed for future generations is of utmost importance to all of us.

It is vital to better address and prepare together for the increasing extreme floods, droughts, fires and water pollution events that severely impact our infrastructures and economies and the well-being of millions of citizens in our hemisphere every year.

Finally, once more, Canada would like to congratulate the Dominican Republic on its leadership for the forthcoming Summit, and to highlight its open and active commitment to the meaningful inclusion of women in the process, as well as civil society organizations.

Canada is a committed friend, partner, and ally of the Summits process, and we will work with you to ensure that the Tenth Summit remains a forum for dialogue – and action – on the most pressing challenges in the Americas.

Thank you Chair.
