ACTIVITY REPORT OF THE TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUP (TAG) CHAIR ON SUSTAINABLE PORT MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Period June 2023 – May 2026 (Approved during the Fourth Plenary Session on Tuesday, June 9)

I. General objective of the TAG:

Within the framework of the Plan of Action of Roatan 2023 - 2026, the general objective was established to “advance towards competitive, safe, sustainable and inclusive ports to ensure comprehensive development in the Americas with the active participation of the private sector.”

Divided into six priority areas, the Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) advise the InterAmerican Committee on Ports (CIP) in making decisions regarding the strengthening of inter -American port policy dialogue; greater hemispheric cooperation for port development; capacity building and technical assistance of the CIP with members, associate members and strategic partners; and promotion of the ports of the Americas in active collaboration, promoting public-private partnerships.

1. Name of the activity: Database of Experts in Port Sustainability and

Environmental Protection.

1. Objective: The document, which consists of a large contact database of port sustainability specialists, is a platform that will allow the port community in general to identify and facilitate contact with experts for the generation of an active exchange of knowledge and development of capacities in matters of port sustainability and environmental protection.

1. Results: Generate a database of contacts on port sustainability and environmental protection for National Port Authorities.

The participation of the National Port Authorities of Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay is appreciated for contributing to this database which is available on the CIP Portal or by clicking here.

2. Organize, in the next three (3) years and with the support of the CIP Secretariat, at least one hemispheric conference or seminar on the topics of competence of the

TAG.

1. Objective: To provide an international platform for public and private dialogue on strategic actions to promote sustainable maritime-port management. To recognize the importance of efficient and environmentally sustainable management in port operations and its effect on economic growth and development in the region.3

from 12 CIP-OAS Member States.

The event p rovided an international forum where experts from public and private entities discuss key actions and strategies to promote sustainable port operations in the sector. Discuss the different uses of technology and how they support creating a cleaner port sector, en ergy transition, climate change, among other challenges in the sector.

Likewise, during the event, the Maritime Award of the Americas 2025 was presented to institutions from Brazil, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic with honorable mentions for Chile and Costa Rica. In addition, the 2025 Outstanding Woman Award was presented to Daniela Pinheiro from Brazil.

3. Activities in support of the work of the Secretariat in the context of the CIP Fellowship and Capacity Building Program (e.g. workshops, online courses, master's degrees, local and/or regional seminars, etc.)

As Chair of the TAG on Sustainable Port Management and Environmental Protection, the APN of Peru in collaboration with the CIP Secretariat, committed to the port development of the region, planned an ambitious calendar of online courses.

From June 2023 to May 2026, three (3) courses related to the TAG were carried out, additionally, the APN in coordination with the CIP OAS held twenty-two (23) courses on topics such as security, planning, port logistics, digital transformation, among others, training 663 port officials from twenty-seven (27) Member States.

Objective: Provide tools for the application of the methodology for measuring the carbon footprint in port operations and instruct on international norms or methodologies and standards: GHG Protocol, ISO 14064-1:2018, the Methodological Guide for the Calculation of the Carbon Footprint in Ports, among others that are relevant.

Objective: To generate a space for meeting and networking at both the national and international level with the aim of disseminating the work carried out by institutions in the port sector at the hemispheric level and sharing the actions that have been developed in t erms of environmental management at the hemispheric level.

1. Results: The first edition of the information bulletin on the TAG’s matters was produced, which featured articles from 10 international institutions. In addition, visibility was increased on the different practices, policies and activities that are being implemented by the National Port Authorities around the protection of the en vironment in the sector and awareness was raised on the importance of creating and promoting policies with a sustainable approach in organizations.

1. Objective: Contribute to the safety and protection of ships, port facilities and the environment with the correct application of the IMDG Code by land-based personnel where appropriate, since this IMO standard was created for compliance by seafarers, shipowners4

and operators of merchant ships engaged in the international maritime transport of dangerous goods.
